Phoenix City Councilman, District 4
In the face of tough economic times, it can seem like economic news is synonymous with bad news. But for some Phoenix businesses, that is not the case.
The opening of the METRO Light Rail has brought forth exciting new developments throughout the city. Many local restaurants along the line have experienced an influx of customers, and new businesses are springing up along track routes. I am especially excited about the resurgence of businesses in District 4 near Central Avenue and Camelback Road, including the arrival of new galleries and retail stores like Haus Modern Living and Oliver & Annie Pet Boutique.
With the help of light rail lines, these local businesses are bringing a dynamic energy to the area, adding a distinct new character and bringing diverse cuisine to the neighborhood.
Especially in light of recent budget cuts the city has had to make, supporting local business is more important than ever. Independent businesses help stimulate the local economy, bringing in more sales tax revenue for state and municipal governments than national business chains. I encourage residents to explore these new venues and take in their culture and charm.
Below are just a few of the great local restaurants in District 4, running north to south:
Aiello’s Fine Italian Dining, 5202 N. Central Ave. Before moving to Phoenix, Aiello’s Fine Italian Dining formerly served guests on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. Now located on Central Avenue at Colter Street, the restaurant is run by Chef Joe Aiello, his wife and two daughters, and boasts authentic Italian cuisine.
Postino Wine CafÈ, 5144 N. Central Ave. Opened in April, Postino Wine CafÈ is a recent addition to the neighborhood and has some of the best bruschetta around, according to the Phoenix New Times “Best of Phoenix” issue. The Central Avenue venue is its second opening in the Valley, after its first location in Arcadia.
St. Francis Place, opening soon at 111 E. Camelback Road. St. Francis Place will operate under the direction of chef and owner Aaron Chamberlin. Chamberlin’s prior restaurant experience spans the country from San Franciscoto New York City and Washington, D.C. It will be open for lunch and dinner and Sunday brunch.
Two Hippies Beach House Outrageous Tacos and Burritos, 501 E. Camelback Road. The Two Hippies Beach House is a quaint stand with colorful personality, known for its fresh ingredients and delicious Mexican food at a great price. Stop in for a quick bite and find out for yourself.
Maizie’s CafÈ and Bistro, 4750 N Central Ave. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, don’t miss this local restaurant and the wide variety of dishes it offers. In addition to its great happy hour specials for working professionals, the cafÈ has a very friendly, relaxed atmosphere and an inviting outdoor patio perfect for Phoenix weather.
