Sunnyslope’s traditional Fall Festival has been replaced this year with the Sunnyslope Community Day, featuring a health fair, Mexican fiesta, local government information, and more.
The event takes place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, along the free SMART shuttle bus route that runs throughout the area. Fifteen venues adjacent to shuttle stops will be having special events concurrently. Don’t want to wait for the predictably full shuttle bus? Residents are encouraged to walk or ride their bikes to each Community Day event.
Some of the hightlights include:
• Sunnyslope Family Services Center & Maricopa Integrated Health Systems, 914 W. Hatcher Road, will co-host an agency fair featuring information from 20 agencies serving Sunnyslope families. Celebrate families with live music and enjoy the kids’ zone, door prizes and health screenings.
• A Community Heath Fair presented by John C. Lincoln Health Network, in the parking lot of Desert Mission, 9201 N. 5th St. (see our “Healthy Living” section for more details).
• El Gran Taco, 722 W. Hatcher Road, is hosting a Mexican fiesta to celebrate affordable housing opportunities in Sunnyslope. Join the party for free food and entertainment and learn about Sunnyslope’s affordable rental communities.
• Sunnyslope Skate Club at Sunnyslope Mennonite Church, 9835 N. 7th St., offers 25 ramps and rails to give Sunnyslope’s skateboarders and rollerbladers a place hang on Friday nights. The ramps and rails will be open for all ages to ride in celebration of Community Day.
• Celebrate recreation in Sunnyslope with class demonstrations, games and entertainment at the Sunnyslope Community Center, 802 E. Vogel Ave. Food and drink will be available for purchase.
• Sunnyslope Village Alliance, 755 E. Hatcher Road, will host exhibits from various city departments and the Attorney General’s office. Business partner, Credit Union West, will be giving away 200 tree saplings.
• Celebrate the rich history of this community by visiting the Sunnyslope Historical Society exhibits and see a special vintage car display, 737 E. Hatcher Road.
• Most Holy Trinity McHugh Hall, 8822 N. 7th St., will have information about the different ministries, carnival games, face painting and popcorn.
• Children can listen to a story, make autumn crafts and have their face painted at Acacia Library, 750 E. Townley Ave., and adults can see how the library has changed while celebrating reading.
Also enjoy open houses at the Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County center, 729 E. Hatcher Road, featuring games for children and book prizes; the Vogel Townhomes, 9615 N. 13th Ave., Desert Mission Neighborhood Renewal’s first affordable townhome development for first-time homebuyers; and Sunnyslope Fire Station, 403 E. Hatcher Road.
