Kiwanis honor local students |
Seven local students were honored by the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyslope during its “Student of the Month” luncheon, held Nov. 12. Honored as a Student of Month were Rayna Castillo, seventh grade, and Jesse Juarez, eighth grade, from Royal Palm Middle School. Castillo, who plays volleyball and basketball, was recognized for receiving perfect scores in math and reading on the AIMS test. Jaurez also plays basketball as well as football for Royal Palm, and was praised for being a leader on campus.
From Mountain View Elementary, seventh grader Linda Santos and eighth grader Guadalupe Carranza were honored. Santos, whose favorite subject is science and who wants to be a veterinarian, was noted for being motivated and setting a good example. Carranza spends time tutoring other students and wants to be a teacher herself some day. From Desert View Elementary, fifth grader Adriana Andrade Hernandez was praised being dependable, consistent, and for being an inspiration for the rest of her class. Also honored at the luncheon was Sunnyslope High School senior MaryAnn Keyser and Central High School senior Tania Alfonso. Keyser is part of a new program at Sunnyslope that matches junior and senior mentors with freshmen students. She has been instrumental in the program. Keyser says she would like to study languages in college, with an emphasis on French. Alfonso, who emigrated from Cuba in 2007, is learning English quickly and passed the AIMS test the first time. She wants to study international relations in college and become a diplomat. Two students selected from Sunnyslope Elementary—Ezequiel Arias and Samantha Rosas—were unable to attend. |
