If you are a grandparent raising a grandchild or if you are taking care of a relative’s child, you will need formal custody to obtain benefits such as health care or to enroll the child in school. To help, Duet and The Children’s Law Center provide a free clinic for kinship caregivers. On the third Friday of each month, a volunteer attorney guides grandparents through a guardianship petition. In order to give grandparents the specific help they need, attorneys will provide legal advice and answer questions only regarding uncontested guardianship.
