Board formed to review contaminated corner |
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) maintains a registry of sites in Arizona where groundwater and/or soil contamination is present and which qualify for funds from the Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF). A site at the northeast corner of 7th Avenue and Bethany Home Road was placed on the WQARF Registry on Aug. 25, 2004. It includes a 2.6-acre former shopping center that housed a dry cleaning facility. A community advisory board (CAB) that meets quarterly was formed in March 2010 to assist with progress at the site by participating in community outreach and providing comments to ADEQ on remediation techniques and other issues. There are 35 sites on the WQARF Registry. The maximum score a site may receive is 120. This site has a score of 29. Scores are used to help determine relative risk and do not necessarily mean that there is direct exposure of contaminants to humans or the environment. The next CAB meeting for the site is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at ADEQ, 1110 W. Washington St., Room 3175.
