Assistance League of Phoenix (ALP) has named Gene D’Adamo, vice president of Community Relations for The Arizona Republic, as honorary chairman of the organization’s 37th-annual Celebration of Caring. The event, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23, raises funds for Assistance League’s six philanthropic projects, including Operation School Bell, a program which provides new clothes for more than 4,000 children a year. The honorary chairman is selected on the basis of involvement in the greater Phoenix community and commitment to improving life for those in need. D’Adamo manages the Community Relations Department for the newspaper and directs corporate and foundation contributions and community outreach programs. He also oversees the employee volunteer program and public service space. Under his direction, The Republic’s Season for Sharing and Republic Charities partnerships have become two of the state’s premier corporate philanthropic programs, generating more than $46 million in the past 13 years to support local charities. Since 1994, Season for Sharing has provided funds totaling $117,500 to ALP to outfit more than 2,100 children with new school clothes. Assistance League of Phoenix is an all-volunteer organization founded in 1960. The Assistance League Thrift Shop, 7224 N. 7th Ave., provides partial funding for its philanthropic projects. The group is one of 117 chapters or guilds of National Assistance League nationwide, and Operation School Bell is the national signature program. All services remain local.
