Perfect time of year outside

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department continues its winter/spring programming of hikes, outdoor and education events at the North Mountain Visitor Center, 12950 N. 7th St. Pre-registration is required for all programs; visit www.phoenix.gov/parks for information or to register. Note that most programs will have a nominal fee.     • Gazing of the Stars—Join the Phoenix Astronomical Society and their telescopes for a look at the sun and then, once dark, a look at the stars (Program #43649). Meets from 5 to 9:30 p.m.     • Twice is Nice Hike—Join Park Ranger Al on this fast-paced hike that includes hiking up and down two mountains in one day (Program #43650). The hike on Sunday, March 16, will cover approximately 8 miles with steep climbs, rocky sections and a total elevation gain of 1,400 feet. Meet at 2:30 p.m. Bring water and sturdy hiking shoes.     • Mid-Weeker Sunset & Moon Rise Hike—This guided hike on Wednesday, March 19, will give you great views no matter which way you look (Program #43651). This is a strenuous 4.7-mile hike up the south side of Shaw Butte. Meet at 5 p.m. Bring a flashlight or headlamp and sturdy hiking shoes.     • Time to Kick Butte! Hike—This hike up Shaw Butte on Sunday, April 13, will be a thigh burner (Program #43661). This is a 4.7-mile moderate to strenuous hike with an elevation gain of 750 feet in 2 miles. Meet at 4 p.m. Bring water and sturdy hiking shoes.
