Kiwanis honor local students

Two local students were honored by the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyslope during its “Student of the Month” luncheon, held April 10 on the campus of Sunnyslope High School.

David W. Richardson from Sunnyslope High School was praised for having served more than 1,000 community service hours, including church related trips to Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Honduras, Mexico, Ecuador, and coming up this summer, Uganda. He is in the National Honor Society, on the Honor Roll, has received the Principal’s Award, Scholar-Athlete Award for Tennis, Outstanding Technology Student, and first place in the District Wide Fitness Challenge.

Yazmin Herrera-Torres from Royal Palm Middle School was acknowledged for her strong work ethic and strong parental support. She was described as an excellent creative writer, and is one of the most improved ELL students this year.

Other students who were given awards but not in attendance due to AIMS testing were: Jazmin Armenta from Mountain View Elementary, and Yezica Delgado from Sunnyslope Elementary.

The Kiwanis honor outstanding students each month as a way of applauding their academic and leadership successes and encouraging them to continue to set an example for their fellow students. All students receive a framed certificate, a pen, a bumper sticker and a T-shirt.
