Movie Mondays at the Heard
The Heard Museum’s summer film series continues with “Hopi Quilts” (30 minutes) and “Hopi: Corn is Life” (20 minutes) on June 9. The documentary “Hopi Quilts” takes viewers inside the homes of Hopi quilters to hear their voices, gain insight into their culture and discover how they have adopted an American tradition and made it uniquely their own. “Hopi: Corn” is Life shows intimate scenes of Hopi family life, work and important seasonal rituals, beliefs and survival skills that have kept their culture thriving.

Also showing will be “The Canary Effect” on June 16 (60 minutes). This documentary takes an in-depth look at the devastating effect that U.S. policies have had on the indigenous people of America.

On June 23, come learn about “Ishi: the last Yahi” (60 minutes). In the early 1900s, Ishi, the last of the Yahi Indian tribe, is discovered nearly 20 years after the Yahi tribe was thought to be wiped out. The curators of a museum agree to look after him, hoping to learn more about his him, his tribe and beliefs, and to teach him to survive in the modern world.

The month wraps up June 30 with “Weaving Worlds” (43 minutes). The documentary explores the personal stories of Navajo weavers and their complex relationship with reservation traders.

The Heard Museum is located at 2301 N. Central Ave. Movies are free with admission, which is $10 adults; $9 for seniors (65+); $5 for students with a valid student ID, and $3 for children (6-12). Children under 6, Heard Museum members and Americans Indians receive free admission.
